Find out what styles to invest in to prepare for warmer weather
December is drawing to a close, and in a few more weeks, the cold winter will leave us as the spring comes rolling in. Fashion designers have announced their Spring/Summer 2014 collections, and today, I’m taking a look at the hottest trends to swap your jumpers for in preparation for the spring.
While styles have been extremely varied, some trends and themes seemed to recur throughout the catwalks. Irish designer Simone Rocha brought out the winter staple of layering and took it into spring with the collection she debuted in the London Fashion Week, but it seems like simplicity is a key feature in collections this season. Belinda Earl, style director of M&S Women, said that, “Key trends for Spring/Summer 14 include sleek styling, over sized shapes, punchy brights and sophisticated statement whites” in an effort to echo understated elegance.
This trend resounds in the Irish Tatler’s Spring/Summer spread as well. Bright colours like pastels with large floral prints are common, but white is a repeated theme. As Grazia Daily claims, “Supercharged posies, tattoo blooms and 3D blossoms – florals have had a serious makeover. Do mind the herbaceous boarder but forget about chintzy prints and frumpy frocks.”
To emphasize sophistication and luxury, designers also opted to add a touch of sheen to their collections. Marc Jacobs and Simone Rocha churned out satin and metallic clothing that makes the wear absolutely resplendent under the spring or summer sun. However, in the same vein, the transition to warmer weather ensured that we would get a lot of sheer and clothing made with transparent panels this year.
And finally, the pleats were the star of the show. From skirts to tops to dresses and coats, designers went all out with pleats. Laura Larbalestier told Metro News that “It’s the key investment piece right now and appeared in all of the key spring/summer 2014 shows,” and that the pleated skirts are a great investment because the look is easy to carry over from season to season.
