I love wearing dresses; there’s just something so wonderfully elegant about them. I recently wrote a post about a dress that I am totally in love with – aka, my IGIGI dress. This got me thinking about dress shopping and how hard it can sometimes seem.

We’ve all been there, stood in our fave store, trying on dress after dress, but for some reason nothing looks good. You probably can’t even pinpoint what the problem is, but you know it just doesn’t look right.

Pretty Big Butterflies - plus size dresses

When it comes to buying a new dress, it can sometimes seem impossible finding the perfect one. There might be plenty of beautiful plus-size dresses on the market, but finding one that is stylish and flattering can be tricky.

Despite past experiences with unsuccessful dress shopping, it’s important to realise that it can be easy.

Don’t shop alone

While heading off on a shopping spree alone is a great way to kill some time, if you’re on the lookout for a dress, don’t hit the shops by yourself. When it comes to choosing the perfect style, a little help from your friends is a must.

There’s nothing nicer than receiving a compliment when trying on a dress that you are nervous about. If you shop alone, even if you take the plunge and try a dress design that you would normally steer clear of, you have no one on hand to confirm how good it looks.

Friends can be all you need to branch out and buy an outfit that normally, you wouldn’t dream of wearing. So when it comes to dress shopping, having a friend in tow is an excellent idea.

Be brave

If you always stick to one style of dress, be brave and branch out. You might think that a certain cut won’t be flattering on you, but you might be pleasantly surprised. As well as grabbing a couple of dresses in your fave style, pop a couple of different dress designs in your basket.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you are stuck choosing styles that could potentially work for you, ask a member of staff for advice. Whenever I struggle to find something a little bit different to wear, I ask for help and most of the time end up loving the suggestions.

Pick a dress that accentuates your waist

For us curvy girls, our waists are our secret weapons. I love my waist, which is why where possible, I always opt for designs that accentuate it. Dresses that show off your waistline come in various styles, so there are plenty of options to choose from.

From knee length dresses to maxi ones, there are so many waist accentuating designs on offer. I consider the maxi dress to be one of the most versatile pieces in my closet. It’s a style that I love because many designs come in at the waist.

Choose a style you’re comfortable with

While it’s important to be brave when it comes to choosing a new dress, opting for a style that you’re comfortable with is also a must. Fashion is all about your own tastes and likes and dislikes. Yes, trying new things is crucial, but so is being comfortable. The most important thing is only to buy a dress if you feel good in it and know that you will be happy wearing it.

Dress shopping can be tricky, but choosing the perfect design doesn’t have to be as hard as you think.
