Ah, holidays. Sun, sea, sand and… stress?! Wrangling your toddlers off to look at Roman ruins, at first glance, seems far less appealing than simply finding a babysitter and treating yourself to a spa visit – but your little ones won’t stay little for long, and holidays are often treasure-troves of well-loved family memories. They’re worth saving up for. Here are seven top holiday destinations that every family should have on their bucket list.
Cornwall
As we’re all becoming more aware of air miles and eco-friendliness, staycations are becoming the new cool. Plus, you can put all that money that you would have spent on airfare towards a swanky hotel, five-star meals, or lots of trips and activities. There are tons of great holiday spots in the UK, from Scarborough to Brighton, but it’s worth taking a trip to Cornwall at least once. Older kids can try surfing, younger kids can frolic on the beaches, parents can enjoy picturesque seaside villages and arty cafes – and everyone can tuck into Cornish pasties, rich Cornish ice cream, and rich clotted cream slathered on scones.
Orlando
If you’re going to go all out, though (and if you’ve already taken one no-fly holiday, you can feel a lot less guilty about jetting off somewhere exciting), Orlando is the place to be. A city set in sunny Florida, it’s home to world-famous theme parks like the Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios, plus water parks with thrills-and-spills rides, giant flumes, and pools to suit all ages. You could even top it off with a trip to nearby Miami. I can’t wait until we get to buy Orlando tickets and let our boys have the best time of their lives! One day!
Greek islands
Ancient culture, rugged islands, dazzlingly blue water – Greece has it all. You can stay on one island, or hop around; if you want to be extra fancy, you could even charter a boat. Kids will love snorkelling in clear ocean, playing on golden-sand beaches, and eating out in rustic tavernas. Who knows? They might even come back with a passion for classical history.
South of France
The South of France is a classic holiday destination for a reason. It’s home to a gorgeous climate, some gorgeous beaches, and fantastic food. Take your kids to the local market and let them pick out fresh bread and tomatoes for a picnic lunch – or simply lie by the pool as they play. If they’re a little older, why not try to learn some French beforehand?
Kenyan safari
Kenya is the safest safari destination in Africa. While a safari might be expensive, you’re guaranteed that it’s a holiday your kids will never forget (especially if they’re big fans of the Lion King!). Explore the rolling savannah and spot animals like zebras, giraffes, and even lions roaming free. What could be better?
Costa Rica
South America might not be your first thought for a family holiday, but Costa Rica is one of the planet’s most magnificent places. It’s much safer than many other Latin American countries, and it’s a treasure trove of lush, jewel-bright rainforest and breathtaking beaches. It’s also packed full of wildlife – look out for monkeys, hornbills and parrots. If your children have an adventurous streak, there’s even more to do; why not try jungle ziplining or take a boat trip? Even more of a plus point, it’s relatively affordable compared to European destinations.
Morocco
Adventurous kids will love Morocco, Africa’s safest country. Explore the spice-filled bazaars of Marrakesh, or take a camel ride into the desert and sleep under the stars. At night, you’ll often hear spontaneous music sessions in city squares, and your children will get to see a completely different culture in action – and taste delicious Moroccan food! If you’re looking for more of a poolside break, villa rental is very affordable, allowing you a taste of private luxury. Morocco is also easy to get to from the UK, with regular flights from London.
