There is a lot to be said for being plus size and fit. Everyone seems to have an opinion on it and the opinions vary enormously. But the thing I wanted this post to focus on was that it’s your choice what you do with your body and no one should ever shame you into anything! If your new years resolution is to get fitter, excellent. If it’s just to remain amazing… amazing! Size does not indicate health. That’s an important fact. Anyway, the thing I want to focus on is what you can do to build on your ‘get fitter’ self confidence. This year I don’t plan on losing weight or having any kind of goal to change how I look. I am to get a little fitter and to take my own lunches to work. Pretty simple and I do what I want how I want too. It can be really hard to join a gym surrounded by (what seems like) gym professionals and I don’t want to start a massive regime, that’s not me!

Here are a few tips that would help me (and you) along the way of getting fitter this year – no matter what your size or shape.

You Need To Focus On Fitness Not On Fat

Yes, I said the fat word. One I have taken ownership of. In other words, just like I said above, I’m not really interested in losing weight and have no ambition to be smaller. I’m ok the way I am. If I lose weight as a consequence thats ok. But that’s not my goal. So, all you need to concentrate on is staying fit. Follow the workouts that keep you busy and on your feet. For a while, stop thinking about the scales; the numbers might haunt you but don’t worry about that – they are just numbers and they don’t matter. You need to first concentrate on getting fitter; your ultimate goal should be to make your body capable of staying fit rather than on how it looks. Once your mind set changes I think it will take some of the pressure off.

State Of Mind - Plus Size Sportswear

Get Comfortable Clothes

Now you may ask what does this have to do with anything. Well, it plays a very important role in keeping you fit. Unless you have comfortable clothes, you won’t have the confidence and motivation to workout. You might feel tempted to get a size smaller outfit as an incentive. Don’t do it. We are focusing on the here and now of how you feel. That’s the important thing.  Here are some tips on choosing plus size clothes that might help you in your choices.

You need to feel comfortable, whether you’re walking, swimming, practising yoga or just house work. So get an outfit your own size, flaunt your looks, and just rock the whole experience.

Right Size Gear

The same goes for the gear that you might buy. One size fits all equipment might not be right for you and so you need to look around for one that best fits your need. There are numerous plus size gear available; from bike steps to exercise balls. You can get whatever you want. Many gyms offer plus size equipment as do numerous other outlets. Look for the one that suits you. As an example, most people don’t think about this, but if you’re planning on taking up bike riding, you might need a bigger seat to make you feel more comfortable. It might sound funny, but TRUST me, this WILL make a difference.

Look For Partners

You might not like it when your super fit gym partners flaunt their strength and measurements in front of you. You need to understand that their fitness goals are different than yours and it might be better to find someone who is at the same level to you. There is a great plus size and fitness community on twitter and loads of Facebook groups. If you’re struggling to find a motivational partner – drop me a message, I’ll encourage and support you!

Don’t Overdo It

Take your time, it isn’t a race. Don’t compare yourself to others and don’t let negative vibes from anyway sway you off your ambitions. If it’s doing Zumba in your front room or joining an outdoor group. Do what you can and be proud that you’re trying something new or getting back into the swing of things. It’s ok, you’re allowed to take your time and enjoy what you’re doing.

These fitness and confidence tips are just the tip of the iceberg but they are a great place to start. Also, overexertion can result in body aches, which can dampen your enthusiasm to work out. It can help to use this sports tape to reduce discomfort and carry on with your fitness schedule. Just keep your mind on the goals and go for them, but don’t overdo it. And do remember; the slow and steady wins the race. Best of luck! Also, take a look at Fabletics reviews if you want some activewear inspiration.
