Growing up, it is likely that if someone asked you what you want to be when you’re older, you would say a job such as a doctor, a teacher or a zoo keeper. Yet when you grow up, you find there are many more complex positions within these that you might not have known about. For example, instead of being a general doctor you might be a plastic surgeon or an anaesthetist. You might be a university lecturer or an equine specialist. No matter what it is that you choose, it is exciting when you realise the myriad of different careers that are out there for you. One of the hardest things can be to whittle it down into what you actually want to be and many people find that because they don’t know, they end up settling in a job they don’t like and end up not being very happy in. To try and avoid this from happening, it is a good idea to follow some of these top tips that should help you to find your perfect career.
- Do your research
Whether you are looking to work in a boutique hotel or become a veterinary nurse, it is important to do your research. This is because there could be many parts of the job that you don’t realise are involved and also you might need certain qualifications. It is a good idea to look up and find out the different areas of certain careers and see what you need to do in order to achieve this role before diving straight in.
- Speak to people who already do the position you are interested in
One of the best ways to learn about a job and get a realistic view of how the ins and outs work is to speak to someone who already does it. It could be that you know someone that is in the role (or a similar one) that you could talk to. Alternatively, you can do your research and reach out to people on Linkedin or via email and ask them some questions about it. This will mean you know the nitty-gritty bits of what the role entails and will be more prepared.
- Don’t be afraid to try different jobs
Remember that just because you think you want to do a certain job, doesn’t mean that you have to stick at it forever. You could try a role for a bit and decide it is not for you, but that is absolutely fine. You can try your hand at something new – after all, all jobs will give you good experience for your future and it won’t harm you changing your mind. It might be that the hours didn’t work out or the role wasn’t quite what you would have hoped.
These are just a few tips for finding your perfect career. By following these it will help you to find a role that is best suited for you and your personality and what you want from a job.
