We all have little vices in our lives, especially when it comes to our health. We know there are parts of our lifestyle that we know will be detrimental to our long-term well-being but we continue to go down that path. Whether it’s smoking or burning the candle at both ends, learning to be healthier is more difficult than anybody gives it credit for. And if you want to sleep better but you can’t or you feel that you should try and have one vegetable in your diet every day what does it really take to get rid of the current unhealthy habits that you have?

The Importance Of Healthier Swaps

We need to look at it from the perspective of someone who has an addiction. When we are classed as an addict, we are an addict for life, and this means that we’ve got to take a more proactive mindset to minimising triggers. But something that many people do is make a swap. If, for example, they are addicted to smoking they have to make a swap to something else in order to minimise that anxiety and need for the original substance. This is why many people vape because it’s deemed as a healthier alternative. And when we start to look at our own habits that we perceive as unhealthy it’s not necessary but getting rid of these things once and for all but it is about making a swap. Another example would be something like sugar. If you have a big problem with sugar and you can’t put the biscuit tin down, learning to find ways to satisfy that sweet craving is crucial. People talk about having more fruit but you can also think about other natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup. And you may very well feel that you need a huge amount of this in order to feel satisfied, but what we then have to do is gradually turn the dial down and minimize this intake.

Baby Steps, Not Cold Turkey

You may feel that in order to feel a sense of achievement, you go cold turkey. The big problem with people giving up anything after a long time is that cold turkey is incredibly difficult. It’s not just our mind that gets a battering during this process but it’s also that we get withdrawal symptoms. If you are trying to give up sugar and are going cold turkey you may feel that you have more temptation to eat sugar than ever. It’s far better to implement baby steps because you are still giving your body what it thinks it needs. If you are someone that believes you have the mental strength to overcome it then you can try it. But what happens when we fall off the wagon is that we beat ourselves up because we are a perceived “failure.” This is why it’s far better for anybody going through an addiction to an unhealthy substance or habit to wean themselves off it.

Understanding Your Triggers

If you have a problem with sugar, don’t have sweet things in the house! This is one of the most important lessons anybody can learn with regards to unhealthy habits. When you start to surround yourself with these triggers this is why you will inevitably cave in. And when you start to surround yourself with healthier habits these become positive triggers. Someone who doesn’t exercise much can struggle to be motivated, especially after a long day at work. And because you come home, sit on the couch, and put the television on this means that these unhealthy triggers are overwhelming you. Instead, think about getting into specific habits. For example, as soon as you come home from work you go straight to the gym or out for a run! Once you start to make positive swaps in terms of these triggers you will begin to see a massive difference.

In order to truly fix our lives, we’ve got to look at these unhealthy habits. But fixing them isn’t an overnight job. A lot of people feel that in order to truly start again they have got to draw a line in the sand. The real way to make positive changes in your life is about gradually altering these things. It’s also important to remember that when you are making healthy swaps or starting to exercise that these become lifestyle choices. Because when people talk about a diet or a new exercise regime it implies that they are temporary. The best thing that anybody can do in order to truly look after themselves is to make proper lifestyle changes.
