With lots of us spending more time than ever at home, we’re starting to look at options for creating more space in our house. Although moving house is a nice option if you do want to upsize – it isn’t always financially feasible. However, if you have a garage, loft or even a large garden you can utilise this space to ensure that you’re making the most of it. Converting something like a garage is the ideal way to make a home office, or even an extra bedroom depending on your family set up – an ideal way to create extra space!

Things To Consider When Converting a Garage

If you are looking to convert a garage then there are several things you’ll want to consider, especially if you are looking to undertake the project yourself.

  • Walls – Make sure the walls look stable and there are no obvious defects. Any broken bricks, cracks etc. will need to be fixed before you consider going ahead with any conversion work.
  • Insulation – Your garage is unlikely to be insulated and if you’re going to be using this as a permanent room, you’ll definitely want it to be. Look at options for insulation floor, roof and the walls so the room is comfortable enough to be used fulltime.
  • Ventilation – To avoid any issues with damp you will want to look at ventilating the garden too. This may be with the installation of trickle vents, or perhaps a whole new window.
  • Weather – Your garage is likely to be single leaf construction which means it isn’t massively weather-proof. If you do wish to use the garage as an extra room in your home then you’ll certainly want to make sure it is damp-proof before you do so.

Using The Room

If you do go ahead with a garage conversion then you’ll also want to make sure it is functional – for example, electricity installed to the right safety requirements and perhaps soundproofing so you aren’t constantly disturbed by noises from outside

Of course, once all the practical stuff is done you can start to think about how you’d like the room decorated. Shopping for homeware is one of my favourite things to do, so I’ll be in my element once it gets to this stage.

Before you get to that stage you might want to consider the whole project and the work involved. There are certainly plenty of professionals out there that can help with converting a garage so it may be that you want to call them in and skip doing the project yourself.
