For several reasons, the kitchen is of vital importance to the home. It’s here that you’ll be cooking up every meal you eat and storing all of the items you need to get the job done. Clutter in this space can be a nightmare to deal with, and if you don’t have much room to begin with, it can be doubly so. Let’s look at a few methods of maximising space, even if your kitchen is a little on the small side.
Hang up Utensils
Pots and pans are notorious for consuming tons of room in cupboards. Being hollow on the inside, and coming with protruding handles, it’s often impossible to stack them in a space-efficient way. Moreover, if you want to access the one on the bottom, you’ll probably end up removing half of the contents of the cupboard.
Hanging utensils from special hooks and rails provides a solution. The rail should run near to where you’ll be cooking; many cooks hang their pans from the extractor hood itself.
Storage on the rear of doors
If you want easy access to a few low-profile items, then the rear of a door might be just the way to do it. You can hang spice racks here, as well as shelves for pot-lids and other necessities. By doing this, you’ll be effectively doubling the amount of stuff you can reach at one time, and removing the need to empty a cupboard when you’re looking for just the one item.
Storage under counters
On a similar note, attaching magnetic strips to the bottom of a kitchen counter makes it easy to attach metallic items. This is a great place for those items you often reach for, like spices. Bear in mind that the items you store in this way will need to be lightweight enough that they won’t fall off under their own weight.
Movable Shelving
Storing a few key items in a mobile unit on castors will allow you the flexibility to make the best use of the available kitchen space. When you need those extra items, you can wheel in the extra unit. This is ideal for those pieces of equipment that you only reach for on certain occasions. Woks, potato mashers and basters might qualify, but in the end, your cooking habits will determine which items you want to keep to hand.
Swap Benches out for Chairs
The dining area is another part of the kitchen where you might be struggling for space. If your table is too close to the walls, then you might find it difficult to get around to where you’re supposed to be sitting – which might not be ideal if you have guests over. If you find a dining table with bench bundled in, you won’t have to worry about this; since your seating doesn’t have a back, it will be able to slide all the way under.
