It’s so hard these days to find the time AND the money to head off on holiday. We are definitely in need of some sun, sea and sand but it’s different to when we were child-free. Now there’s so much more to think about – and the costs soon start racking up. So I’ve had a bit of a search and here are my top tips for getting yourself that affordable family getaway.
Head Somewhere Different
If you head somewhere a little more unknown, the chances are the prices of almost everything will be lower. After reading about some of the best affordable getaways in Europe, somewhere like Budapest is worth researching.
It’s still under the radar as a top tourist destination but it has everything you need for a great family getaway. From amazing food to lots of cultural history. It’s a little gem waiting to be explored.
Rent a House
Sometimes it seems easier to grab yourself a package holiday. But actually, if you rent a house you’ll be amazed at how much more you get for your money. From amazing walk-in showers to all the amenities you might not get in a hotel. Plus you’ll have your own space so no need to worry about the kids keeping the people in the room next door to you awake all night!
It also means you can arrange things before you get there. I’ve had friends arrange for nappies and wipes to be delivered before they arrived to save time, hassle and baggage fees! All those little things add up.
Caravan Parks
Don’t give caravan parks a miss! They’re hugely family-friendly and you can grab a bargain if you go just outside of peak season. It’s a great way of escaping the everyday routine but still HAVING a routine. (If you’re like me and hate change, this is a fab one!)
It’s like being at home but with more places to explore. There’s more for the kids to do and usually with a pretty lovely space around you. Take your own food, have picnics instead of eating out and take your shopping with you.
Caravans might not sound too glamorous but these days, they’re so much better than people think.
Stay at Home
Don’t all groan at once. I know it isn’t the same as actually going on holiday but if you make a conscious effort to take some time out you might surprise yourself. (You could save enough money to buy yourself a new bathroom!).
Take a few days off, attempt to do the minimum in terms of looking after the house and plan a week of fun things for the family. You’ll be surprised that a little research goes a long way. They’ll be a tonne of free or very affordable things to do in your local area. From free museums to open days. You can take picnics to the park, head a little further out and head to the seaside or camp out in the garden overnight.
Staying at home can be an adventure, you just have to give it a try and think outside of the box.
