We all want to wake up feeling refreshed after a good night’s sleep, ready to take on the day; research shows that most humans require between 7-8 hours sleep a night to feel rejuvenated the following day. However, if you’re still feeling groggy when you wake up, this could be down to a number of reasons, one of which could be the quality of the sleep you are getting.
Here, we take a look at how you could become a deeper sleeper, and get the sleep you need throughout the night to wake up feeling refreshed!
Why You Need A Good Night’s Sleep?
Sleep is an important part of life, but alarmingly, four out of five people complain of disturbed or inadequate sleep, with half of us getting just six hours sleep or less each night, leaving us feeling sluggish throughout the day. Not only can this affect your health, but it can have a detrimental impact on the day to day activities you are undertaking.
Understand How Much Sleep You Need
Everyone is different when it comes to the amount of sleep we need, what times we go to bed, and how easy we find it to wake up in the mornings. But understanding your own body, and how much sleep you realistically need to function will ultimately help you to become a deeper sleeper. Not only getting the amount of sleep you need, but increasing the quality of it too!
As you sleep, you go through cycles of sleep; firstly, you will experience a lighter sleep which is then followed by deep sleep and a dream state – you might have heard this be referenced as REM sleep. Typically, the full sleep cycle lasts for 90 minutes and can be repeated several times a night.
Keep A Sleep Diary
If you keep a sleep diary each night, it will help you to determine what triggers certain things that might happen throughout the night. If you’re wondering what type of information you should be documenting in your sleep diary, it can be anything that you might think could have an impact on your sleep, whether it’s the time you’re going to bed, to what you’ve eaten throughout the day (including how much caffeine has been consumed), and any exercise undertaken, amongst other activities!
Change Your Surroundings
One of the reasons you may be struggling to find yourself having a deep sleep each night could be the surroundings whilst you’re asleep. Consider the temperature and comfort of your bedroom, is it cool, dry and fresh? And don’t forget to limit the amount of screen time for at least an hour before bed, being distracted by the television, your mobile or other personal devices.
You should look to change your mattress every 8 years, as overtime the quality of it can deteriorate leading to health issues. One of the most important things that will help you become a deeper sleeper is to ensure you are comfortable at night, and if you are sharing a bed it might be difficult to find a mattress that suits both of your needs.
