There are many reasons why a child might have to change schools. Their parents might be going through a separation or perhaps one parent has to relocate for work. Understandably, changing schools can affect children in more ways than one, which is why it’s important for parents to handle the situation with care. I have teamed up with Manor House School to explore how changing schools can distress children in the hope that it can help parents know what to do to ease the transition.
First of all, a child that is moving to a new school will have to adapt to a new teacher, who might have completely different teaching methods and maybe even a different curriculum. If they are behind or ahead of their new class, they may become disinterested in their lessons. Parents and teachers are urged to observe new students and give them extra support if they appear to be performing poorly in any of their subjects.
Children who are thrown into an environment where they don’t know anyone and are forced to leave behind their friends can suffer from anxiety. It’s important that they know they can still stay in touch with their old friends and even meet up with them if they’re not too far away. This will help them feel less alone. You could also arrange a play date with some of the new classmates so that your child can make new friends.
If your child is moving schools, it’s important that you remain as positive as possible about the situation. This will help put their mind at ease. It might be worth showing your child the school website or prospectus, to help spark interest and excitement, rather than fear and anxiety.
There’s a great website called Young Minds that can give you advise on anxiety in little ones if you want some advice or direction.
