Getting pregnant can be hard. For some couples it can take years of planning and trying, whereas for others the timing can take them by surprise. The thing is no matter how you get there – having a baby is a wonderful thing. No one ever feels truly ready to become a parent. You realise that so many of us are learning how to parent each and every day. There will be ups and downs on this journey you’re about to embark on, your life is going to change and ultimately it will be for the better.
Realising What Matters
After you’ve had a baby, you’ll look back on things you thought were problems and laugh at them. Your child can shift your whole world but in the best possible way. You start thinking about what will make life better for them. We’re a little bit selfish from time to time, and having a child takes away from that. You want to do anything in your power to make them happy. Your future is not just about you anymore – it’s about your family.
Time Management
From the late night, early morning feedings to the toddler tantrums in the middle of any public space and even to the moody teenage years – you have to put up with a lot. You can’t have a reasonable conversation with them, you just have to be there for them. You will learn the gift of patience. You will take some deep breaths and get on with it. You will be amazed at how much you can handle. Have we mentioned multi-taking yet? You will become pro at how to make the most of your time.
Self-Care
Even though having a child takes up so much of your time, it does give you the opportunity to look after yourself better as well. You’ll want to eat healthier and encourage good lifestyle habits early on. Remember the air mask metaphor – you’ve got to help yourself, before helping others.
Unconditional Love
You will not be prepared for how much you love this baby. There is no bond as special or strong like between parent and child. As your little one gets older, you’ll feel that love come back to you as well. You will have a new appreciation for everything your mother did for you once you start your own parenting journey. With Mother’s Day coming up soon, it could be just the right time to show how much you care with a special gift for your mum.
Having a baby can be one of the most rewarding things you will experience in your life. Just because you haven’t planned it doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.
