Even as an adult a trip to a local farm gives me a little buzz of excitement. There’s something about seeing animals up close that makes me feel like a kid again. It’s also something I can’t wait for Baby C to do. Seeing his little face when he stands next to the pigs or cows is going to be pretty amazing! It’s a great day out at any time of the year and if you wrap up warm it’s great to do during autumn and winter too. Plus, it’s great that kids get the change to see where food really comes from and not just the supermarket. If you’re thinking of heading to a farm near you here are a few essential things you need for your day out.
Treats
There’s nothing like getting involved in the chores of a farm. Farms usually let visitors get involved in small aspects of the day. So check with them if feeding the animals is allowed and don’t forget to take some horse treats (I heard they like spearmint!) Take some treats for yourself too, there’s nothing like a panic on a farm to put a smile on your face.
Drawing Materials
Being on a farm is a huge thing for most children. Let their imaginations run wild with some pens and paper. They can draw what they see, create a story from the animals or even pick things up along the way and stick it onto a collage. This spreads out the day and adds another fun element with an educational twist.
Camera
Days out like this are making memories. Grab a couple of shots so you can look back on your family days out. Plus you can use them on rainy days as inspiration for other creative ideas. Maybe, building your own cardboard farm or writing a famer story all based on the pictures you’ve taken.
Hand Sanitizer & wipes
Feeding and touching the animals can be magical but mucky. Plus, there’s likely to be mud and all sorts on the farm. Keep some hand sanitizer handy for those messy moments
Change of Clothes
Just like above, the farm can me a fun but messy place. Be prepared for anything by bringing a change of clothes with you. The last thing you want is to have a muddy backseat!
