When you have children, you suddenly become responsible for looking after this mini human. Although you might think this is keeping them safe & fed throughout the day, it is so much more than that. It’s about choosing whether they’re vaccinated, what school is best for them and teaching them how to look after their teeth. As grownups, we all know the importance of good oral health, but as a parent, I now have to teach two little ones that too, something we’ve felt important as parents to make sure happens.

Starting Young

The best tip I can give you is to start young – before they have teeth even! Buy a soft bristle toothbrush and let your baby play with it and even place it in their mouth – it’s how they discover things. This gets them used to the concept of brush their teeth, so when they do start to have teeth come through brushing them will seem natural.

Relieve Any Fears

Lots of Adults will say they have a fear of the dentist and this is something I didn’t want my children to experience. It is worth looking up a local dentist (Google dentist in South Tampa or dentist in Nottingham) for example and see if they offer appointments for children. By doing this you are showing that going to the dentist is a completely natural thing to do and isn’t scary! If you only take children when they need a filling or are in pain they’ll associate the dentist with negative experiences and it is really important to avoid this.

Making Brushing Fun

It’s also important to make brushing fun rather than seem like a chore. Let them chose the toothbrush that they want so they’re excited to use it. You can play music or even download an app that encourages you to brush your teeth for long enough and have a little dance around while you do it. This gets everyone moving and laughing, which means your child will be much more likely to want to join in when the time comes.

Keeping The Whole Family Safe

Make sure that you get the whole family involved in brushing their teeth. Children definitely learn lots of their behaviours by watching adults so brushing your teeth as a family will get them interested & they’ll want to join in.

Cosmetic Procedures in Adults

As adults, if our teeth aren’t as perfect as we would like there are different cosmetic procedures that we can go for. This is a big decision and something that you should discuss fully with your dentist before you make any decision. So, if you have signed up to a dentist in South Tampa or one local to you and you’re unhappy with your smile, speak to them. As experts in this field, they’re in the best possible position to discuss the options with you and help you decide what is the best route for you to take.
