Having a nice warm home to return to on cold days is wonderful. It helps you to quickly warm up, relax and forget the pressures of the day. If you have not already done so, it is time for you to go through your house with the aim of making it as cosy as possible. To help you to do exactly that I have put together this quick tips article.
Sort out your bedding
It is always a lot colder at night than it is during the day, so you need to start with your bedrooms. If your quilt has seen better days, go out and treat yourself to new winter bedding. Over time, quilts start to thin. The fibres they are made of tend to compact, especially after you have washed them a few times. This means that there are not enough gaps between the fibres to hold the warm air. For this reason, old quilts are rarely as good at keeping you warm as newer ones are.
If you do not do so now, consider using layered bedding on your bed. Adding a heavy throw over the top of the quilt will make sure there are no gaps. On warmer nights you can simply fold it back over the bottom of the bed. That way, if it gets colder later you can just reach down and pull it over you.
It is also worth considering switching to brushed cotton sheets. The slight fluffiness of this material holds the warm air, so they never feel cold against your skin. Many people use a brushed cotton top sheet as well in the winter. Of course, this means a little more washing, but it really does make a huge difference to how warm you will feel.
Stop the draughts
Now that it is colder you can easily detect any draughts in your home. One evening, go around checking each door and window feeling for cold air. If you feel any cold air coming in around your windows or doors, you know that you need to draught proof them. This is easily done using stick on draught excluder tape. If your windows are very draughty you may want to try some of the additional techniques that are outlined in this easy to follow article.
Check your heating
If you have not already had your heating on, switch it on and go around making sure that each radiator is giving out enough heat. It is also worth checking that your thermostat is working. You should also make sure that your heater is not due to be serviced. An un-serviced boiler is potentially dangers as well as inefficient and unreliable.
Get out some rugs and throws
Rugs help to stop draughts coming up through the floorboards and provide a little extra insulation. They also make a room look and feel cosier. Putting some throws out also helps. Most people like snuggling up under a blanket or throw and they look nice too.
