Any parent knows how important it is to both discipline their children properly and also reward them from time to time when they deserve that. If you are failing to do either of these, it can result in a child who grows up to be either overly careful of their behaviour or the opposite – completely reckless – and neither of those are healthy ways to live a life. In order to master the reward and discipline of your child, there are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind. Let’s look at those now to help you along as best as possible.
Setting Boundaries
Boundaries are one of the most important parts of this whole process, but also one of the hardest to set up properly, as you need to make sure that it is being done early on and reinforced regularly. If you are having trouble setting boundaries for your child, then you’ll find they only push further than you would like, and this is rarely going to work out well for either them or you. Set boundaries early on, however, and this is going to mean there is actually something to enforce later on, which will make it a lot easier.
Try Different Disciplines
It’s a good idea to try out different methods of discipline, as every child is different and is likely to respond differently to certain methods. As long as you experiment in this regard, you are going to be more likely to chance upon a method that your child specifically responds to well, which is of course the whole idea here. Make sure you don’t stick to a discipline that is definitely and clearly not working, and do all you can to try out various ones which you think have some kind of purpose behind them.
Don’t Forget To Reward
Of course, you also need to remember about rewarding your child when they have deserved it, and this is just as important as setting boundaries and disciplining them too. If you are never rewarding your child, you are going to find that they are actually more likely to behave badly, as they will start naturally acting out in those kinds of ways. So make sure you treat them from time to time, whether it’s with a surprise brownie delivery or whatever else. This is going to be hugely important as time goes on, so don’t overlook it.
Stay Vigilant
Finally, remember to stay vigilant when you are disciplining your child and rewarding them, and make sure that you are working hard to be consistent in how you approach this. If you are not consistent, that can prove to be a problem as your child will have much less reason to trust you and your discipline procedure. When you are more consistent, it means that you are going to get a lot more out of them and they will understand why you are doing what you are doing a lot better.
