While in lockdown, one of the things that many people look forward to is their walks around their local area. It can have you exploring areas, and beauty spots that you didn’t know were nearby and can ensure that you and the kids are getting some well needed fresh air. As it gets warmer, and the days get brighter, it is normal to want to spend more and more time outside. Whether you are on a nice walk or spending time with the children in the garden, you must make sure that all of you are protected against the sun.

Using adequate protection against the sun will prevent anyone from getting painful sunburn. Below are some tips that will help protect you are your family from the sun’s harmful rays:

Use sunscreen

When you are buying a new suncream, you should check the bottle for the sun protection factor (SPF) and the level of UVA protection. You should always aim to buy a suncream with an SPF of at least 30 (higher if you have younger children) and that has at least a 4-star UVA protection level. If it doesn’t have these, it may not protect you properly.

Sunscreen needs to be put on just before you go out, on all areas of skin that will be exposed to the sun. It should be reapplied around every two hours or after you have been in water.

Protect your eyes

Your eyes also need protecting from the sun. If it is a particularly bright day, being out in the sun for a long time can hurt your eyes. Sunglasses are easy to get hold of, and you can even buy prescription sunglasses online if you need them. You could also treat yourself to some Versace glasses. Even if you are wearing sunglasses, don’t look directly at the sun as it can permanently damage your eyes.

Another way to protect your eyes is to wear a hat with a brim. This is a better option for children as it is easier to keep on their head.

Stay in the shade

If you are going to be outside for an extended amount of time, it is a good idea to find a shaded area. This is especially important if you are out between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm, as the sun is at its highest. It will give you extra sun protection and make it less likely that you will overheat.

Wear thin layers

The best way to protect against the sun is to cover up. Although this might not be something you want to do when it is warm, it is better to have the option than not. A light, flowy jacket can help to cover your arms while also ensuring you stay cool. If you or the kids go swimming, make sure that they have a towel or something else that they can cover up with when they get out.

If you or your child gets sunburnt, make sure you treat it straight away.
