Summer wardrobes and winter wardrobes serve very different purposes, and you’ll need both to get through the entire year. Most of the time, we aren’t at an extreme of temperature, but transitioning. So, if you’re going to get through spring and autumn, you’ll need a wardrobe that’s flexible enough to deal with the changing seasons. Let’s take a look at a few wardrobe essentials, and see what purpose they can serve when we’re between seasons.
Lightweight Coat
Your wardrobe should ideally include a winter coat for when it’s literally freezing outside. But it should also include something that’s lightweight and stylish to deal with that late-summer rain. The classic grey trench coat fits into this category, as do parka coats with detachable hoods.
Gilets
A gilet is something that you’ll be able to slip into when the weather begins to get a little bit chillier. It’ll slide nicely over the top of a jumper or a long-sleeved shirt, and thus it will complement the rest of your wardrobe, provided that you opt for the right colours.
Beanie
The right headgear is essential when autumn rolls around. A classic grey beanie can be inserted into just about any casual ensemble; it’s practical and looks effortlessly cool. Keeping your hats close to hand, such as on your coat rack or in a designated drawer.
Boots
A substantial pair of riding or Chelsea boots will match nicely with jeans of just about every sort, providing fantastic comfort and warmth during October and November. Women might go for something over-the-knee; that way they’ll be able to rock a shorter skirt, even late into Autumn.
Blazers
Blazers will probably always be the epitome of chic, provided that you know how to properly pull them off. They’ll match with denim or plaid, and come in a range of different tones. For maximum flexibility, opt for something muted and low-key. The classic combination is black and navy-blue, so go for whichever colour that your jeans aren’t.
Plaid Shirts
Plaid shirts offer just that little bit more weight than cotton or silk ones. The style might once have been the preserve of early-90’s grunge singers and lumberjacks, but that’s changed, and the cosy plaid shirt is now the height of cool. You can layer another shirt with your plaid to create some contrast, and to keep warm during the colder months.
Knitwear
For that little bit more warmth, there’s nothing quite like a woollen jumper. Knitwear comes in a sizeable range of styles, weights and fits, so it’s worth keeping a selection on hand for when the time comes. Cardigans make an excellent substitute for a blazer, or, if you opt for a funnel-neck, with a t-shirt. If you’re wearing a suit, then you might swap out the waistcoat for a thin-knit cardigan.
