My mum used to smoke, she smoked for years. From the age of 15, she told me they used to go into an old churchyard and smoke – hiding away from their elders! Back then, according to my mum, smoking was cool. Then when she turned 35, after a visit to the doctors, she stopped. She had really bad heartburn and the doctor said she needed to stop. Just like that. 20 years of smoking and she just stopped, with willpower. She said it was stupidly hard but she did it. But I feel like this is a rarity. Almost impossible. It definitely isn’t that easy for everyone.
My dad is another example. The same kind of history. Smoked since he was a teen. He has tried to stop probably 100 times over and just hasn’t been able to do it. So if your willpower isn’t as strong as my mums, what can you do? Well, one thing my mum said she wishes existed when she was trying to stop is Vaping and it’s the one thing that’s helping my dad on his journey.
Vaping is an alternative to smoking and although it’s a relatively new thing, it’s definitely helping people on the road to a smoke-free life. The NHS says that e-cigarettes aren’t “completely risk-free” but “carry a small fraction of the risk of cigarettes”
When I last updated you on the blog, my dad had yet to try vaping. I think he felt a bit silly! But It’s really interesting to get my dad’s perspective. For him, it’s about the motion. That habits you’ve created over the years are more than just smoking. It’s about holding something in your hands, the time of day, the routine. Vaping helps my dad because he can do all of the same processes but without actually smoking a cigarette. He can keep doing it too, whereas most other things he has tried don’t give him the same experience. So he always goes back. He has got around the fact that he is holding an e-cigarette and even he acknowledges that so many people are doing it these days!
Somewhere like VIP e-cigarette shows just how far vaping has come and how much is available now. From different flavours to different machines. There is something to help everyone. There are even kits for beginners so it makes it a simple, uncomplicated process to transition from smoking cigarettes to e-cigarettes. I know my dad found it relatively easy and he hates anything new, fiddly or that takes more than 5 minutes to get your head around!
Of course, you should always do your own research and take the necessary precautions But so far, vaping is working for my dad and that works for me!
