Whether you’re looking to buy or rent your next property, you’ll want to feel at home there. Choosing where to live is a massive commitment and one that you’ll want to get right. I know that when we relocated from London to Nottingham it was a big deal & one that we wanted to make sure we got right. Once deposits are paid, it’s hard to make a u-turn! We spent a while looking at houses and doing some research before we took the leap – so here are some tips we think might help you when you’re next house hunting.
Know What You’re Looking For
Sit down and make a list of all of the things you’d like from home. Include everything, even the stuff that isn’t essential but just would be nice. think back to when you moved into the house you currently live in. What little things did you learn, like or dislike? All those things need to come back to the front of your mind. Once you have this, work it into categories of what you must have and what would be a bonus. For example, off-street parking might be something you’d like but a garden for the kids to play in would be considered essential. You might find it hard to find a house that has everything on your must-have list, but it’s a place to start and helps to ensure that when you are looking at homes you have an idea of how suitable it will be straight away.
Make Use of The Resources Open To You
The internet makes it easy to do your research, so take advantage of this. Sign up to places like On The Market, Rightmove and OpenRent. Even make yourself and your property search known to local estate agents who may be able to help. Also, make sure you look at the local area and what it offers – check the broadband speed, what takeaways might deliver there & how good the schools are. Think about the things that you do or use in your everyday life and what you can do to check that you’ll still be able to do this in your new home. Think about what’s important to you. Do you drive? Check out the parking, try doing your work route during the rush hour or think about where family or friends will park. Have kids? Think about local green space, child safety in the property and even how close they are to main roads. There’s so much to think about so write it all down.
Take Your Time
If you are able to then take your time. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of house hunting and rush your decision. However, moving house is always a big decision and one that you should think about carefully. Take your time looking and researching so that when you do take the plunge and move, you can feel confident it is the right decision for you and your family.
