I’m bored! How many times do you hear that in the school holidays? As a mum of two energetic boys, school holidays can be both a blessing and a challenge. On one hand, it’s amazing to spend more time together as a family, but on the other, keeping them busy, active, and entertained for weeks can feel like a full-time job! Over the years, I’ve learned a few strategies that keep my boys happy, engaged, and occasionally worn out, without sending me into complete chaos.

1. Outdoor Adventures for Fresh Air and Fun
One of the best ways to burn off energy is to get the kids outside. Whether it’s a local park, beach, or just the backyard, outdoor play lets them explore and use their imagination. My boys love hopping into a ride on monster truck—it’s not just a toy, it’s an adventure! They can race around, learn coordination, and enjoy hours of imaginative play while I supervise nearby.
If your family enjoys water activities, consider trying commercial kayaks. Paddling together is a fun bonding experience and gives kids a sense of independence and confidence on the water. Plus, it’s exercise disguised as play—a win-win for everyone.
2. Create Themed Days
School holidays are the perfect opportunity to let your kids’ imaginations run wild. Try themed days at home, like “Dinosaur Adventure” or “Pirate Treasure Hunt.” You can hide toys, create maps, and even cook themed snacks. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; just a little planning goes a long way to keeping kids excited and engaged.
3. Mix Structured Activities with Free Play
It’s important to balance structured activities with free play. While trips, crafts, or lessons are great, kids also need time to invent games, build forts, or just play independently. Free play fosters creativity and problem-solving skills, and as a mum, it gives me a chance to catch my breath too!
4. Rotate Toys and Activities
Keeping toys fresh is key. I often rotate my boys’ toys, bringing out something they haven’t seen in a while, like the monster truck or water-based toys. This simple strategy makes old toys feel new again and keeps interest high without constantly buying more stuff.
5. Encourage Family Projects
School holidays are ideal for involving kids in family projects. Cooking simple meals, gardening, or even small DIY crafts can be both educational and fun. My boys love helping out, and the pride they feel when a project is complete is priceless.
The holidays don’t have to be stressful; they can be a season of adventure, bonding, and creating stories your kids will remember for years to come.
