As anyone with kids will now – they quickly build up plenty of possessions! That’s certainly the case with Cameo and Marlo – their toys and other bits and bobs are often poking out of shelves and keeping them hidden away is tricky!

Keeping ‘floordrobes’ at bay and finding a home for all those toys is actually really important – research shows that an untidy room can impact your mental health.

Here are some ways you can try to bring calm to the chaos!

Get fitted up

Lots of free-standing furniture can leave wasted space in the areas above and to the side of items, and the temptation to cram things into those nooks is often strong! However, doing this will only add to the clutter that you want to beat!

If the space you’ve got is small or is in need of lots of storage – for example, a shared kids’ bedroom – then fitted furniture is well worth considering.

Choosing fitted wardrobes with extra storage to maximise space will give you spots to keep many other things properly tucked away along with clothes.

Make the most of every space

If clutter is driving you up the wall – use them to your advantage!

Floating shelves can create extra homes for things to live, while box shelves are perfect for those that want to keep on top of clutter and can be fitted with cupboard doors, or filled with baskets to keep the mess out of sight and out of mind.

A tidy floor will instantly make for a much tidier room!

Get furniture that works for you

Another tip for smaller rooms is hunting down multifunctional furniture – whether it be a bed that opens up to reveal storage space, or a chest that can become a seat with a comfy cushion placed on top of it.

Making the item a destination for the kids to find their favourite toys – and put them back again! – will also bring a bit of structure to playtime. If you have enough rooms in your house to designate one as a playroom – all the better!

Get rid of what you don’t need

Be proactive when assessing your own items – it’s not just the kids that can build up possessions over time!

Do you really need that old pan set? Can the TV table in the loft find a better home?

You could even make a bit of cash by listing your items on Facebook marketplace or a similar platform, but if you want to do a good thing for you and others – why not take your unwanted items to your local charity shop?

Take it outside

I’ve previously posted about how great the garden has been for the kids to get outside and play, but it’s also a space that can double up for storage! Those bigger items can live in the garden for the most part, giving you much more space inside to relax in!

Even if your outside space is small, finding a container for the muckier toys that your little ones own will keep some of the mess stress at bay! Remember that getting your little monsters involved in the tidying process is another great way to stay on top of clutter – why not try this song accompaniment
