Flowers are lovely aren’t they? Big, bright, wonderful flowers of all shapes and sizes; each beautiful in their own way. I’ve recent started to fall in love with plants too! I was always afraid of houseplants because I assumed they took a lot of upkeep to alive – watering (just the right amount), temperature, sunlight and in the right room in the house. It all seemed a lot to me, so I was put off the idea.

However, I have recently discovered a new found respect for succulents. In various shades of green and in a variety of shapes, they’re really lovely! Succulents are generally called such because they have large, fleshy leaves that hold a lot of water – this helps them to be easy to look after, perfect for a plant-novice like me.

The Nicest Things About Succulents

One of the nicest things about succulents is that there are so many available – so whether you’ve space for a large plant in your house, or something small and more suitable to sitting on shelf you’ll be able to find something that suits. They’re also pretty affordable, with succulents available for all budgets. This is great, because like me, you can start with a small, affordable one and make sure you can keep it alive before you invest further into plant life (spoiler alert – I’ve kept all mine alive with no issue at all).

They’ll need a suitable sized pot to live in, which you’ll fill with soil up to around an inch away from the top. You can then place the plant in, making sure the roots/base are covered with soil. Fill the top with water and find a place in your house that gets at least some sunlight – it’s that easy!

Looking After Succulents

If you’re still not sure how to look after one, the kind people at Eddington House Nursery have put together a really easy to follow succulent care guide.  It covers everything from the type of pot/container you should use, what compost is a good choice, where to find the right grow lights for succulents, how to water and look after them and even how to keep them outdoors if you wish!

We’re living lockdown life at the moment, so I’m all for doing what you can to make your surroundings feel nice & alive. I know we’re all a bit stuck in and probably bored of staring at the same walls, so a few house plants could well be a way of keeping you busy and brightening up your home – win, win if you ask me!
