Top 4 Ways to Create Space in Your Home
If you have children, then you probably feel as though your home just never has enough space. I don’t know if it is just my two, but kids seem to have so much stuff! This January, I have decided to try and get on top of it all a little bit and get some space back. It’s not an easy task and sometimes I feel like I make some space, turn around, and it’s been filled back up again! Slowly, however, I’m getting there. I thought I would share with you some of the tips I’ve come across which can really make a difference to the space in your home.

Declutter to create more space.
One of the first things I would recommend doing is to get rid of things you no longer need that are taking up valuable space. We’re probably all a bit guilty of hanging on to too much stuff – and then the children go and get a pile of new toys at Christmas, so it is easy for your home to get overrun. I would recommend going through everything you have and seeing what you still need. You can even get the little ones involved! We did a clear out recently after I explained that some children didn’t get any presents or toys for Christmas. I suggested we could give some other children the toys they don’t play with anymore and they were TOTALLY up for it!
You’ll find there are lots of things you can get rid of; clothes you don’t wear, toys the kids have grown out of, and gadgets you no longer use. Once you’ve decided what you no longer need, go through the items and see which ones you can sell, what is worth donating and, finally, what needs to be thrown away or sent to the recycling centre. Be harsh: if you haven’t seen it, used it, or worn it in the last year, is it likely you ever will again?
Get clever with storage to add more space.
Once you’ve decluttered, you need to look at storage options and think about how to get clever with storing your belongings. For example, storing shoes in a box under the bed means they’re easy to find, but also out of the way, so they don’t take up space. Get some big boxes for toys and work out what toys you can store away that you don’t need out all of the time.
Sometimes, it can feel like your house is full of boxes, but there are lots of other space-saving storage options out there. From under bed storage, to secret coffee table compartments, get on Pinterest, or take a trip to Ikea, and you’ll find something to suit you. Be careful not to pick up anything you don’t need though as this can just create more clutter and less space!

Create more space with a conservatory.
Of course, if you a garden, you could consider extending your home to give you even more space. Having a conservatory added to the back of your home is a fantastic and affordable way to create an extra room that will give you much more space. I’m based in the East Midlands and places like Stormclad’s double glazing showroom in Wheatcroft Notcutts Garden Centre, Nottingham, give you the option to buy now and pay later, so it definitely works investigating the options and seeing what you might be able to make work for you. By the time you’ve purchased goodness knows how many storage boxes every year, who knows, you could have treated yourself to a conservatory!
I do love thinking outside the box and so many of my friends have conservatories where I’ve often sat and thought about how I’d move things around if it were mine. (Am I the only one that does this?!) I personally love a glass roof conservatory. They always give the illusion of the conservatory being huge, even if it’s a tiny space. Have a look at what is out there and pick something perfect for you and your family.
Benefits of decluttering your home.
There are many benefits to decluttering your home. Sometimes it’s needed to make space for new purchases, other times space is needed when a baby is added to the household and decluttering your home can also have a big role to play in minimising trips and falls in the home.
According to taking care, 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 will fall in their homes this year. A fall to this age group can be fatal so if you have anyone at home that’s elderly decluttering your home is not only space-saving but it could also be life-saving.
The benefits of decluttering transcend your physical safety. Admittedly, certain items you don’t use are still in good condition. Therefore, you can organise a garage sale and make extra cash, improving your financial situation. You can also donate to charity, helping those in need. However, you want to ensure that whatever you’re giving is in good condition. That said, inspecting your donations to determine their quality will prove helpful, so keep this in mind.

Get organised to maximise your space.
One of the best ways to ensure you have plenty of space in your home is to get organised. If you have made all of this effort to create space, declutter and get things stored away, the last thing you want is lots of clutter undoing all of your hard work. So, get organised – make sure everything has its place and encourage everyone in the house to put things back where they belong when they’re done.
Get your little ones in the routine of picking up their toys. If you put on a pair of jeans and they’re uncomfortable or you don’t love them, pop them in a donation bag. Keep on top of it little by little and it helps keep your home feeling spacious and clutter-free. That said, I know that is far easier said than done, so good luck!
