How to dress your toddler for summer

Everyone knows that moving house is one of the most stressful and chaotic challenges a person can put themselves through, but moving house with young children is even trickier. As any parent knows, even a normal day with your kids can get overwhelming, so this upheaval is certain to cause some issues. If you want to keep your kids as calm as possible and ensure a smooth and stress-free transition from one home to another, then here is some helpful advice for you to follow.

Tell Them Early On

The first thing that you need to do is tell your children about the move. Some parents like to leave this until the last minute, so that their children have less time to get worked up, but this is a mistake. You should tell your children as early as possible so that they have time to get over the initial shock, process the idea, and get used to it. If you try to keep things a secret, your kids will figure out that something is wrong, and will imagine scenarios much worse than this one.

Keep Them Informed

When you tell your children that you’re moving, it’s often best to give them all of the facts, so that they know what to expect. Of course, you won’t need to tell them unnecessary details, like when you have to sign the sales and purchase agreement, but you should let them know why you’re moving, when, and where to. When you do this, let them ask you as many questions as they want to and tell you how they feel. After all, they may be young, but this affects them too.

Involve Them In Decisions

Moving house may be your decision, or it may be something that you have to do for one reason or another, but it affects your children nonetheless. Because of this, it’s vital that you take their opinions into account and involve them in decisions as much as you can. For example, you could take them along with you to a few viewings, and ask them what they think. You could also let them pick which room they want and ask them how they want to decorate it.

Stick To Their Routine

The main reason why moving house is so stressful for children, especially young children, is because it often disrupts their routine. Of course, you can’t help that you need to pack, and clean, and go to meetings, but you should still try to maintain as much of your regular routine as possible. You should make sure that you continue to eat, wake up, and go to sleep at the same time every day, and that rules continue to be enforced as they normally would be.

Visit The New Area

Once you’ve chosen a house to move into, it’s important that you take your child to visit the local area. Before you go, make sure you do plenty of research, and find out where all of the best places to visit are, such as leisure centers, play parks, and bowling alleys. If you take your children to all of these cool places, then they’ll start to get excited about moving there. They might even make some friends, which would also make things a lot easier.

Let Them Say Goodbye

Your children are going to have to say a lot of goodbyes when they move, so you should help them and support them through this as much as you can. You could let them get their friends a small gift each and have them around the house for tea a few days before you go. You could also give them a disposable camera so that they can take pictures of their friends, the house, and all of their favourite places, and put them in a scrapbook or photo album.

Remain Calm And Cheery

You’re understandably going to be pretty stressed for at least a few weeks before you move, but you should never let this stress show to your children. It will only make them more stressed, which will make the move more difficult for everyone. Instead, focus on all of the positive things surrounding moving house. For example, they might get a bigger bedroom, or you might be able to get a dog. This will help them to associate excitement with moving, instead of sadness.

Get Some Help

You’re going to have to do a lot both before you move and on the day itself, and because of this, you may want to get a family member or friend to help you take care of the children. This is especially important on moving day, as your kids could get hurt if they’re left alone to run around the house while movers are in. You might also want to ask advice from loved ones who have been through this before about how best to support your kids and make things easier on them.

Focus On Them First

Once you’ve got to your new place, it’s important that your focus is on making the children happy and comfortable, and that you leave everything else until afterward. This means that you should unpack their room and make that look nice as soon as you can. Getting out all of their toys, books, and games will help your kids to settle in, and will also give them something to do while you’re busy organizing the rest of the house.

Expect A Few Issues

Moving is a huge change for your children, so there will probably be a few transition issues to deal with, even after you’ve followed all of this advice. If you start to notice problems, then speak to your kids honestly about how they feel, but also allow them to have time alone if they need it. Adjustments may take a while, but this is completely normal, so try not to panic, and just be there for your kids when they need you.

Moving house with young children is challenging, and if done without preparation, it’s nearly impossible. If you want to make the move easier on your children and keep them as stress-free as possible, then follow the advice above.
