There’s no getting away from it, kids make a mess. They play around outside, getting covered in dirt and try their best to wreck your house with food, crayons and other things you might not want to think about.
While the bathroom is the place you can get your little angels squeaky clean again, it’s also a room that you want to ensure is safe for kids.
Here are ways in which you can make your bathroom more kid-friendly.
Make it easy to clean
When you have kids, you’ll feel like you’re forever cleaning your bathroom. There are ways you can make this job easier on yourself. When you’re decorating, use wall tiles. They’re more resilient and easier to clean. The same goes for the floor too. Keep the bathroom as free from clutter as you can so that it’s easier to clean all of your surfaces.
If you’re painting walls, use specialist bathroom paint and use a few coats in case it has to stand up to some scrubbing as you’re trying to remove felt tip pen from the wall.
Secure any dangerous products
Before you had kids, you probably didn’t give a second thought to items you left lying around the bathroom. Razors, cleaning products, expensive make-up, you’re going to have to put these things out of sight and out of reach.
If you’re keeping potentially harmful chemicals in the bathroom, install cupboard locks to keep curious toddlers safe.
Buy a bath mat
It’s easy to slip and hurt yourself in the bathroom. Buy a good non-slip bath mat for the floor. If your children tend to splash when washing their hands, get an extra-large one that will cover the area near the bath/shower and the sink, or use two smaller ones to cover the space.
A non-slip bath mat in the tub will also prevent accidents when in the bath.
Use a thermometer
You might like your bath water to be very hot, but children need a much lower temperature. To ensure that you get it right every time, buy a water thermometer to check the temperature.
Clean bath toys
Toys are great for getting your children to stay in the bath but can be really unhygienic. All that time spent in water can cause them to develop mould on the inside and outside, which could be a health risk for your children.
After each bath, empty any water out of the toys and leave them somewhere they can dry. Clean the outside with an antibacterial spray regularly and check the inside for signs of black mould. If you find any, throw them out.
Buy skin-friendly bath products
Children’s skin is much more sensitive than adults. Unless you use very gentle products, it’s unlikely that your bubble bath and shower gel will be suitable for their skin. Either change your products so that everyone in the family can use the same, or buy separate child-friendly ones. Popular brands include Child’s Farm, Aveeno, Burt’s Bees and Johnson’s.
Takeaways
With a bit of planning, you can make your bathroom safe and fun for your children to enjoy. Keeping everything clean and safe prevent accidents and keep bath times fun.
