With technology growing and most things moving online, it has become essential for every person to know how to use the Internet well. Whether it is for work, homework or leisure, the internet will have something to do with it at some point. Given that is of easy access and requires little effort, many companies choose to even allow their staff to work partly from home. Schools also require most of their tasks over the weekend to be completed digitally and uploaded onto files online for easy access. However, as broad and exciting as the internet can be, like everything, it comes with its own dangers. Internet safety should be taught to children by their parents as soon as possible to ensure maximum security when using this vast platform.

Understand online dangers. In order to keep your child safe, educate yourself on the real dangers of the internet. Teaching your child the risks of cyber bullying as well as predators having easy access to groom or show them explicit images is vital. Use simple language to explain situations and how each is similar to that of real-life scenarios.
Keep an eye on your child when they are using the internet, ensuring a grown adult is around them at all times. Steer them away from owning a personal device that has access to the internet for as long as possible to keep them safe. Curiosity is a big way for young ones to fall into the trap of predators online as they are still naive when it comes to the dangers of the world. One click of a dodgy link can lead to them having important details stolen or being exposed to something highly inappropriate.
Given that social media is a part of everyone’s life, it is inevitable that your child will want to be on there. Trust that they’ll be safe and give them the benefit of the doubt. Try and keep them as open with you as possible. This way you’ll still have an idea on who they talk to online. Remind them to never share photos or locations with strangers and to keep accounts private where possible.
