Why the midi dress is winning this winter

It’s all over catwalks, high streets and your wardrobe. The midi dress — long seen as a garment best left to old fashion aunts and nuns — is now the hottest style this winter. I am actually in love with the midi dress, and I’ve suddenly acquired a load of them! Here’s why it’s winning, and why you should embrace them too.

Every colour, every pattern

The best thing about midi dresses at the moment is that they’re available in almost every colour and pattern imaginable. This mustard floral midi is from Evans and is just absolutely gorgeous. I’d size up on this one if you have large arms like me, but other than that the sizing is great! My other favourites include a blue leopard print number, bright tropical print, pink animal print and a basic navy polka dot piece. There’s something for everyone!

There’s less risk of flashing

Midi dresses make tall women, plus size women, and women who prefer not to show their knickers in public, all breathe a sigh of relief. The longer length means that there’s much less risk of wardrobe malfunctions or accidental Marilyn Monroe-esque moments — and unlike a maxi dress, your hem won’t end up trodden into winter puddles.

Retro style is in

Midi dresses are pretty much universally retro-inspired, tapping into one of the other major trends this winter. Whether it’s a 50s-housewife-style party dress or a floaty, 90s-grungy floral affair, you’ll be channelling classic styles in your trusty midi. It’s fairly hard to look anything but sophisticated in a midi dress — there’s a reason midi-length skirt suits have basically been the Queen’s uniform for the last 50 years.

They’re not too high, not too low

The best thing about a midi dress is how versatile it is. Unlike a mini or a maxi dress, you can wear a midi dress to pretty much any social function and not look out of place. It’s not too revealing, and falls just short of being over-the-top fancy — whilst there are some lovely (and glamorous) midi-length party dresses out there, a simple leather jacket slung over the shoulders or a pair of casual trainers can dress them down easily. Their demure length also makes them perfect for the workplace, meaning that you can be fashionable without getting a telling off from the boss.

Midi dresses are comfy

And finally, the big-hitter. Midi dresses are chilled out and comfy, making them ultra-popular with the effortlessly-cool crowd. You don’t need to wear skyscraper heels because midi dresses always look better with ankle boots or flats. In the colder winter months, you can fit an extra pair of tights under there, or even thermal leggings — toasty toes, here we come! Oh, and they’re fab for layering too! Pop a jumper on the top or a polo neck underneath. Casual outfit sorted.
