Autumn is a notoriously difficult season to dress for. Just when you think it’s cold enough to wear long sleeves again, you’ll boil by the afternoon. Or perhaps you’re the opposite. You’re still braving summer outfits, and regretting it when the inevitable rain turns out. It’s a nightmare for sensible – and stylish – outfits.
Throw in an autumn wedding, and you’ll be staring at your wardrobe in despair. When the weather is unpredictable, a wedding outfit is difficult to plan. But don’t worry too much – we’ve got some suggestions to help you look fabulous.
- A jumpsuit
The introduction might have made it sound like I don’t enjoy autumn. Quite the opposite. It’s a great season – as the leaves begin to fall, the surroundings are beautiful. It’s definitely a romantic backdrop to get married against.
Jumpsuits are the ideal outfit for seasonal shifts. They’ve been a style staple for some time now, and offer effortless style. What’s more, you can wear a jumpsuit for work, for a date, for a night out and brunch the next morning. It’s one of the most versatile items in a wardrobe, so you won’t regret buying one for a wedding. You’ll get plenty of wear out of it.
- Longer dresses
Regardless of the season, you’ll never run out of choices for long dresses, Yoox have a great selection, and they’re very popular even in the fall. To narrow it down, we recommend jewel tones for an autumn wedding. They’re warm, without compromising on impact. Or why not go bold with some leopard print? It’s one of the patterns of the season.
You could also make a statement with sheer fabrics – you’ll get the benefit of warmth, without covering up completely. Just remember to avoid too much black. It’s a bit of a no-go at weddings.
- Thicker fabrics
Whether you choose a jumpsuit, a dress or an empowering suit, choose your fabrics wisely. Autumn is not the type of flowing, thin materials. You’ll want something a bit heavier. If you opt for a wool, cotton, velvet, or even suede (I’ve seen some great suede dresses out there!), you don’t need to worry so much about the length or arm covering – you’ll be that bit warmer anyway.
- Take a jacket
Churches are cold. When you’re travelling to the reception, it could rain. You might have to wait outside for a taxi. Don’t forget to plan a jacket that looks great with your outfit – trust me, you’ll be wearing it at some point. The Telegraph suggest faux fur, but it isn’t for everyone. To start prepping your wardrobe for winter, it’s best to get a jacket you’ll be comfortable wearing elsewhere.
