Since nobody ever lets you know what’s going on in your body after you turn thirty, right? Your 30s somehow catch you by surprise. One day, you’re ordering 10 pm pizzas without repercussions, and the next, when you bend down, your knees click strangely. Nobody issues you a memo announcing the transition; it just happens, either gradually or all at once. And although ageing is a blessing (yes, I mean it), there were some things I wish somebody had warned me against. In keeping it real and passing on what I wish I knew, here are five body alterations nobody alerted me to and what I’ve learned to live with them.

1. My Hair Had A Plan Of Its Own
I didn’t worry too much about my tresses until I saw more of them going around the plughole than normal. It wasn’t flashy, just enough to catch my attention. As it happens, it’s typical for women to have thinning locks in their 30s, not to mention following a change in hormones. And although I haven’t gone all scientist on it, I have begun to research stuff such as Minoxidil hair loss treatment to know what I’m dealing with. For now, gentle stuff, fewer hot tongs, and not freaking out when my brush is a little fuller.
2. My Skin Decided To Be Dry And Spotty At The Same Time
I honestly thought acne was something I’d left in sixth form. But then my skin, without consulting me, went all flaky one week and spot-prone the next. Apparently, fluctuating hormones and lifestyle changes can cause this charming combo. What helped was cutting back on too many new products and sticking to a simple, hydrating routine. Oh, and drinking more water, but I’m still working on that part if I’m being completely truthful.
3. My Periods Became Noisier, More Abundant, And More Theatrical
Let’s just say my cycle caused a bit of a ruckus. When I was in my 20s, I could nearly forget it was going on. Nowadays, it’s a big production of cramps, bloating, and mood swings. I spoke to my GP, and she explained to me that alterations like this can occur as hormone levels change in your 30s. I’ve therefore stockpiled a wheat bag, increased my store of chocolate, and begun to keep track of my cycle in earnest; it does help.
4. Aches Became Part Of The Daily Routine
I once sprang out of bed like a caffeine-fueled kangaroo. Now, on certain mornings, I sit there wondering if I slept askew or if I managed to age a decade while sleeping. My lower back appears particularly dramatic. Stretching and short excursions have helped a great deal, but I’ve also stopped in denial that I need a good mattress. I very much do.
5. My Metabolism Slowed Down, And My Cravings Didn’t Receive The Message
Food once made me feel “light,” now it can feel like a rock at times. I don’t own a scale, but I can feel my body changing form. There is a temptation to worry, but I’ve learned what works best: gentle movement, better rest, and treating myself more kindly. The goal now is to feel good in my body, not punish it.
I believe what it’s most essential to keep in mind here is this: there’s no manual to turn to in your 30s, but your body remains yours. Okay, it may act a little differently now. But it’s still showing up, day in and day out, for you. And it’s still worth kindness, compassion, and a little bit of grace.
