The world of makeup is a confusing one at the moment – there’s so much going on, and so many techniques and new brands that it’s hard to keep track of it all. Luckily, there are some rules that you can follow to make sure you have a flawless face.
Keep Blending
When you’re applying your makeup, there’s very little that’s more important than blending. If you don’t, you’ll end up with harsh lines on your face that will make your makeup look unrealistic and very plastered on. When you’re contouring, make sure that you blend the darker colour up into your hairline, and when you’re applying your eye makeup, ensure that you blend out the darker colour into your eyelid and use a colour that’s halfway between your skin colour and your makeup colour to help do so. When you’re adding bronzer, make sure that you extend it down onto your neck so you don’t end up with an awkward line on your jaw.
Use High Quality Tools

Using high quality tools to apply your makeup is maybe even more important than the quality of the makeup itself. If you apply poor quality foundation with an incredible brush, chances are you’ll get better results than excellent foundation and a bad brush. Don’t go for the cheap brush sets on eBay – check out makeup tutorials on YouTube (by makeup artists, not YouTube stars) and see what brushes are being used and how. You could also go for a beauty blender, which is a sponge that often applies foundation and blends it much more easily than brushes. Although there are lots of knock offs, it’s generally agreed that the original beauty blender is the best one. Just make sure you dampen it before using it to get the best effect.

There are plenty of celebrity collaborations that are going on at the moment, but the truth is that the best makeup lines from famous people come from makeup artists themselves, who wouldn’t put their names on anything they wouldn’t use on their clients themselves. Look for brands like Charlotte Tilbury and Kevyn Aucoin makeup for real quality. If you really want to go for a celeb collaboration, make sure they’ve teamed up with a brand like Mac or Urban Decay, instead of starting their own line, where the formulas might not be as great. Of course there are exceptions to that rule – just look at Kat Von D, whose tattoo liner is one of the best in the business.
Mix Your Foundation
If your foundation isn’t exactly right or you want a little change, there are ways that you can improve it depending on what your needs are that day. You could always mix it with moisturiser if your skin’s feeling delicate and you don’t want too much coverage, or you could always add some liquid highlighter if you want a more dewy complexion. There are also brightening drops that you can get and add to your foundation during the winter when you might be a couple of shades lighter than you are during the summer.
