I am by no means a wine expert, but I do know what I like and don’t like. I’m a bit of a fusspot when it comes to wine. When I do have a glass (or two) I want to really enjoy it. I’m not a fan of drinking wines that are just mediocre, I want to really love what I’m drinking and make it a bit of an occasion. I recently tried this amazing 306 Biologico Nero d’Avola from Independent Wine.  It’s a new one for me and I was really excited to give it a try. It’s always a surprise trying a new wine, isn’t it? You don’t quite know how your tastebuds are going to react! Well, mine was pretty impressed!

The 306 Biologico Nero d’Avola is a gorgeously deep red wine that feels really indulgent even as you pour it. It’s tangy on the tongue with a real concentrated, fruity punch of redcurrant, cranberry and cherry. It has delicate traces of black pepper, cedar and leather but it’s not too tart or spicy thanks to the touch of tannins, they’ve got the balance just right so it’s incredibly smooth and enjoyable.

Nero d’Avola is produced by Salvatore Tamburello who cultivates his vineyard personally. It’s an organic process and is a family run business so you know this is quality wine made by someone who really cares about their product. It isn’t just hugely, mass-produced by a random factory overnight. This wine is created with quality produce, care and attention and it shows in the flavour and the aroma.

Salvatore Tamburello has a great method for preserving the aroma of the red fruits used int his wine, which is why the flavours are so on point. He uses cold maceration for 20 days at 18 °C, which is actually a very low temperature as red wines usually ferment at 22-30 °C. The wine then spends 20 months in stainless steel tanks, then less than 10% of the wine is aged in oak barriques which is where the delicate touch of oak comes from when you try the wine. Amazing isn’t it?

This is a fab wine for a red meat dish or a hearty earthy meal. Think autumnal stews and casseroles, root vegetables and rich gravies. It’s deep and rich so is going to be a great winter warming wine. It can be tough trying to choose the perfect red Italian wine, but this is definitely a go-to option, especially as the evening starts getting chillier.
