There’s nothing like fresh food is there? When something is super fresh the taste and texture is just on another level. I love cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients but after being in hospital for a week after having Baby C and being having a further 6 week recovery time I was worried about how I would get out and about to get that fresh food. It doesn’t just turn up… well, actually it does! Luckily for me, West Coast Foods deliver award winning fresh Scottish produce with a 24-hour delivery guarantee. Problem solved! Fresh food to my door and I don’t have to worry about a thing!

I love places that deliver food (who doesn’t) and I was intrigued by some of West Coast Foods products as they have a few Scottish favourites on their books that I haven’t tried before. They also have a ‘Skinni’ range, which isn’t about weight loss before you start to freak out. No. It’s a range of super fresh meat that is low in fat, low carb and high protein. Plus they are super easy to cook pieces of meat that are a little bit healthier for you. Fine by me!

When my delivery arrived (super promptly and tracked so I knew when it would arrive) it was in temperature controlled packaging and completely sealed. Always a good start right? Everything was super fresh and I didn’t feel like I had to rush to pop it in the fridge or freezer because it felt like it was almost just out of the fridge. The Skinni range from West Coast Foods consists of a whole range of meats from black pudding to burgers. I opted to try the burgers straight away, as they were quick and ready to go. I tried two beef burgers and two chilli burgers. The meat was nice and pink, firm to the touch and seemed super fresh. Each packet has cooking instructions and of course all the ingredients. They didn’t take long to cook and stayed in shape, firm and there was hardly any grease from them. As you can see from the pictures, they were super meaty and tasted like beef, not full of onion etc. like some burgers!

West Coast Foods, Scottish Butchers - Review - Pretty Big ButterfliesIf you order one of the Skinni meat packs you can grab some of their premium chicken fillets, which are huge! (You can buy them separately too) This is proper chicken, there’s no water when I was stir-frying them and the chicken stayed as firm and plump as it looked when raw. In other words, they don’t pump their chicken with water and hormones to make it bigger. The chicken was super fresh and pretty good value too. I made a quick stir fry supper and there was no fat or skin to be removed from the fillets and they tasted like chicken. (This might sound crazy but the amount of chicken that doesn’t actually taste like chicken is way too common for my liking!)

Beef Olives - West Coast Foods - Review - Food Blogger -Pretty Big ButterfliesOther than the freshness, quality and taste of the meat from West Coast Foods I liked that they had a genuine Scottish feel to them. Yes, they deliver around the UK but they haven’t forgotten that they are a local Scottish butchers too. Offering products like haggis and beef olives means I’m able to try something a little different. I’ve never tried beef olives before and I had to check out the recipe section of the website to see how they cooked them. Luckily, the instructions are also on the packet so I over cooked them and added them to a bit of a mixed grill for Mr. C and I. They were really tasty and tender, I like the idea of cooking them in a tomato sauce like a large meatball… they will be my next try! Of course the Skinni range is just one selection that these professional butchers offer, they have a huge range to choose from including pies, roasting joints (omg – I need to try the lamb) and a whole host of fresh meat.

West Coast Foods are a traditional high street butcher, offering the finest local Scottish meat to the UK. Their little butcher’s shop in Prestwick, Ayrshire has been a success and luckily for us they decided to expand to an online service too. It’s nice to be able to support independent businesses from all over the UK and these guys make is obvious why we should be supporting these kinds of outlets. Fresh, delicious and fast quality food. I’ll be ordering from these lovely people in the future, with food as good as this it would be silly not too!
