Who says you need to go abroad for that holiday feeling? The UK is actually packed with great cities, towns and destinations that will give you a much-needed break without all the hassle of getting on a plane.
From treasured northern cities to Southern seaside towns and historical spots, let’s fall in love with the UK again with these four-weekend getaways.
Manchester
Otherwise known as the foodie city, Manchester has it all going on. As well as being super friendly, it has a cool urban flair that other cities can’t quite match. In recent years, it’s welcomed culinary legends like Dishoom, a four-store Ivy Spinningfields with an incredible rooftop bar, and Mana from Simon Martin who use to work at Noma. That’s right, Noma, voted the best restaurant in the world!
What’s more, Manchester ensures that vegans have their pick of the crop too. Restaurants like Allotment have moved from Stockport to feed hungry Mancunians whilst The Produce Hall is Manchester’s very own Victorian market, one of the hottest foodie destinations in the whole city.
Newcastle
Continuing on our ode to the North, Newcastle has its rightful spot on this list. These days, it’s moved on from its industrial past and is a cosmopolitan hub with something for everyone. The Quayside, which used to be Newcastle’s busy port, is now a glamorous dining and entertainment destination.
For something more authentic, why not head to Ouseburn, the home of Newcastle’s industrial resurgence, where you’ll find a whaling doc and factories that have been in operation for decades. Whilst you’re there, have a bite to eat at The Ship which serves some of the best vegetarian breakfasts in the city. And if it’s later in the day, sample a cask beer at Brinkburn Street Bar & Kitchen.
Brighton
A seaside escape like no other, Brighton is the beating heart behind the South Coast. With many Victorian buildings still standing, as well as the famous pier, visiting Brighton is like stepping back in time. And with direct trains straight into Brighton, it’s really accessible too!
The city has its own quirky personality. Home to numerous vintage shops and independent shops and cafes, you’ll find individuality around every corner. And if you get peckish after a dip in the sea or a turn around the shops, head to The Flint House headed by Ben McKellar. Alternatively, take in the scene from Dome Café where you can enjoy a coffee overlooking North Laine.
Cambridge
Home to one of the world’s most prestigious universities, Cambridge is a dream destination for wannabe architects and culture vultures. Tour the university buildings and take a boat along the River Cam before stopping off at Kettle’s Yard which boasts an exceptional collection of 20th-century British and European art.
