Not too deep into Derbyshire on the outskirts of the peak district sits a little hidden gem. The Farmhouse at Mackworth. We had the absolute pleasure of spending one night in the Farmhouse at Mackworth recently and we’re already planning another trip. A boutique hotel with 10 rooms and a large restaurant and bar, it’s the perfect getaway, stopover or even wedding venue for anyone looking for something affordable but outstanding. It might be known as a country pub but that doesn’t do it justice.
Built within an 18th-century farmhouse it has a really cool new vibe mixed with traditional details. It’s a stone’s throw away from the peak district with lovely countryside views from our room. We stayed in a Suite called the Napolean. From around £150 including breakfast, I think it’s great value for money. With a pastel décor that looks super clean and fresh, a super king bed and bathrobes, Nespresso coffee machine and wifi, it has everything you need and more. But the real selling point for me was the pretty roll top bath and flamingo wallpaper!
The entire room was a bit of luxury but really comfortable. The bath was obviously my favourite thing about it. There’s nothing like relaxing in bubbles while watching the tv. The Farmhouse at Mackworth also provides complimentary White Company bathroom essentials which add to that luxury feeling. Lots of other little things made it for me too. The retro-style radio was on when we arrived making it feel like we’d just got home. There was also a lovely blue shower room with lots of space.
We had dinner downstairs in the restaurant. It was actually quite busy for a weeknight so I’d recommend booking so you don’t miss out. The menu had something for everyone and we could see the stone-baked pizzas coming out of the open oven which looked amazing. We went for Fried Buttermilk Chicken to start, ut was so good I want to try and replicate it. My husband then had steak which was cooked to perfection but was also seasoned really well so it had flavour. Their steak is cooked on a charcoal grill and it makes a huge difference. I went for a hearty dinner of pan-roasted pork collar which went down a treat. To be honest, both dishes were generous but of course, we had to make room for pudding! I had apple and plum crumble and Chiino had cheesecake. It was all delicious and we’d definitely go back. Considering they were busy the service was also great. We didn’t opt for alcohol that night but can greatly recommend the mocktails, which are just as good for Instagram pics as the alcoholic ones.
With our full bellies and feeling warm from the buzz of the restaurant, then another long soak in the bath, we had a fab night’s sleep. It was quiet (other than the storm that was about to hit the UK). We woke up in the morning but it was so cosy I just wanted to stay in bed! We got up and went downstairs for breakfast. Again the food was top quality (hello amazing bacon!) and the service was great.
We’ll definitely be staying at The Farmhouse at Mackworth again. I’d love to explore locally a little bit more next time, we didn’t this time only because of the weather. We’ll be asking for the same room again because it was beautiful. We’d also love to visit with the boys in one of their family rooms, but not sure I want to give up the luxury of the roll-top bath!
