Situated in the heart of theatre land and Covent Garden sits an elegantly simple building that hosts a gorgeous martini bar, fresh dining room and possibly the best pancakes in town. I went to Christopher’s recently to try out their brunch menu and believe me, I was more than impressed. It’s a simple restaurant with an old Amercian glamour appeal. Very relaxed, simple with those key things that make it just stand out above thee average London eatery. The downstairs is a cool and chić martini bar with fast and personal service. The weekend brunch is held in the upstairs dining room and the menu is all definitely representative of the all American champions. I was so impressed with the menu I could have chosen one of everything. It’s easily accessible from Charing Cross train station and a handful of tube stations so it’s perfect for friends to get together for a midday catchup.
The weekend brunch menu is served Saturday and Sunday from 11.30am until 3.30pm. With smoothies, herbal teas, pancakes, eggs of every kind, steak and super foods, there really is something for everyone. We opted for fresh mint tea and Earl Grey. Both arrived as expected in quaint tea pots will refills at any moment necessary. We could have opted for a self proclaimed ‘light & healthy’ option such as a Watermelon, Blueberry & Spinach Salad , but I really wanted to try the amazing steak and eggs I’d heard about. So I did just that. A 6oz grilled rump steak, 2 perfectly fried eggs, a side of fries, huge steak mushrooms and a lovely dressed house salad. I was in heaven.
The portions were extremely generous and considering the quality and location, I was really impressed. The steak mushrooms were incredibly tasty and as a word of advice you can share the sides between two of you as they really are large enough. I asked for my steak to be medium cooked and as you can see it was spot on. Soft, tender and flavoursome. The service was as expected, very professional and fast. Our food came in enough time that made us sure its cooked made to order but enough time to eat our rosemary bread fresh from the basket.
Once the main plates were well and truly cleaned up, we moved on to the pancakes. What I LOVE about Christopher’s is that you can build your own pancakes. You’re given a little shopping list where you can choose the type of pancake, the toppings, ice cream or sorbet, the compote flavour… it’s completely personalised. Build your own pancake really is the way forward. We opted for buttermilk pancakes, nutella (yes nutella!) raspberry compote, mixed berries and a coconut sorbet. It was mouth watering. Absolutely melt in the mouth food. I would go back just for the pancakes. We finished off with a virgin rose cocktail. Fresh muddled Strawberries, Pineapple & Lime Juice, Strawberry Puree & Violet Syrup, shaken & served in a Martini Glass. What better way to end an amazing brunch?
Overall, the service was great, we only had to wait a couple of minutes for our pre booked table. The menu is a great all round brunch offering and the food was cooked perfectly. There’s plenty of space to walk through the dining room and you’re not super close with the other tables which I really like and it’s in a great location. I can’t wait to join Christopher’s for another brunch very soon.
