Summer can be a difficult time for plus size women, especially when everybody on the beach looks like a supermodel in the latest swimwear and bikinis. The mass media don’t help matters either, promoting false ideas of beauty, and the fashion industry condones the ‘skinny’ look, which is not healthy for the model or those trying to copy them.
The truth is, we can look good whatever our body shape. We don’t have to conform to the misguided opinions of others. So, this summer, feel good about yourself, be proud of your body and get out in the sun.
It’s time to break the rules that society has imposed upon us. Here are several ways in which you can break the trend.
You don’t have to cover your body
Many plus size women feel they need to cover their body, even in the warmest of weathers, in fear of being body shamed. It’s time to stop caring about what other people think. You are beautiful and so is your body, so don’t hide it away. If you want to wear a bikini, then do it!
It doesn’t matter how large your thighs are; you are still entitled to wear t-shirts and shorts to prevent your arms and legs from suffocating under your outfit. When the sun is out, you deserve a tan as much as anybody, and your skin will be thankful of any cool breeze that comes along.
Wear whatever colors you fancy
There is a tendency for plus size women to wear black as this makes for a slimmer appearance. That may be true, but when the weather is hot outside, you will soon be keeling over if that is the only color you choose.
The summer months are all about having fun, so wear bright, vibrant colors to match the season and your personality.
Fashion is for everybody
In 2017, the 1980’s are back in fashion, with giant shoulder pads and bright, neon colors. These are perfect for any size, don’t be confined to the clothes you have worn all year round. New trends aren’t only for catwalk models so you should proudly wear whatever is in the season if you want to.
More forward thinking fashion experts design clothes for all body sizes, including Anthony’s collection of Alfred Dunner. What you wear needs to look good and feel comfortable, so if there is something that catches your eye, in or out of fashion, buy it.
Often, plus size women are told to hold their breath and suck in their stomachs to get into clothes that are several sizes too small for them. Shapewear is designed to alter the appearance of your weight and is supposed to help you lose a few pounds in the process. Instead, it can do you more harm than good. Your breathing becomes restricted, and you will feel uncomfortable and tired. So our advice, ditch it, especially in the summer.
