The hectic, hustle-and-bustle life of parenthood can all too often keep our noses pressed against the grindstone. With the day-to-day of both work and home life, it can all feel like a big blur at times. It’s important to make time for your kids and to make memories that’ll last a lifetime – especially when they’re young. Looking back on things, you’ll soon wonder where the years went and how they flew by so quickly.
Fortunately, there are plenty of fun things to do with the kids that you can find around town – that don’t cost an arm and a leg and that don’t require time off work. Today, we’ll outline four great ideas for an upcoming day out with the kids that you all won’t soon forget.
Catch a Theater Show
There are many fun things to do, see and explore in every city: you just have to know where to look. Young children love entertainment – why not make it a learning experience and take them to a theater show? You can quickly check available listings and shows in your area via ticketsales.com and often make a trip out of it. Perfect for summer afternoons, you’ll have the chance to catch everything from Disney on Ice to kid-friendly adaptations of history’s biggest and most popular stories.
Visit a Hands-on Museum
Oh, the curiosity of young kids! Coupled with the seemingly unlimited amount of energy, most toddlers and young children want to constantly be exploring with all of their senses. Another great day-time activity for the kids is a trip to your nearby children’s museum or “discovery center”. These discovery museums and centers can be found in most mid-sized and major cities, and allow kids to get up-close and personal with a wide variety of subjects that provide real educational opportunities that are fun. One example of this is Chattanooga’s Creative Discovery Museum, which boasts everything from a simulated dinosaur bone dig to the expansive bee garden and observation hive.
Head to an Indoor Playground
If you’ve got the day off and the kids are feeling especially energetic, a low-cost and therapeutic way to enjoy the day is at an indoor playground. Most cities have one or more indoor playgrounds that allow young kids to play with their peers and enjoy plenty of exercise opportunities. Many of these playgrounds offer food and additional forms of entertainment such as arcade games on-site, meaning you can make a fun day happen and facilitate everything your young children need at one location. Some restaurant chains – like McDonalds – even have indoor playgrounds (known as McDonald’s PlayPlaces) built on-site.
Go Thrift Shopping
Young kids are fairly easy to please. Small gifts and new places can generate excitement for them in ways that we can only envy as adults. One great way to spend a minimal amount of money and get out of the house is to head to one or more local thrift stores or consignment shops in your neighborhood. You’ll likely find plenty of unique items to peruse and purchase – both for yourself and the kids – and you’ll save a ton compared to shopping at standard retail locations. If you have any flea markets or yard sales going on in your area, consider adding them to your list can help you make an entire day out of shopping for great deals and second-hand items.
There are a plethora of things you can do during the day for little to no cost with the youngsters, but keep these four in mind the next time you need some fresh ideas!
