When someone asked me how much I used the internet the other day I laughed. I use it for 95% of my day. From sending emails, checking social media and checking out the news. Those are just the basics. I think we forget that messaging a friend on iMessage or WhatsApp is all done through the internet! Watching catch up TV, scrolling through Facebook and even ordering take away these days all relies on having a decent internet connection. Talk Talk Business recently conducted a survey to find out more about how people use their internet services and unsurprisingly, 70% of people said they had a broadband connection at work and 61% agreed that they use the internet daily for work purposes.
I use the internet at home, at work and for my part time business. Even more so now that I’m really going in on the whole making money online stuff. I even bought this course which is all about fixing your blog and trying to make it a full time job. It’s so embedded in our lives now the thought of not having it kind of freaks me out. We went away recently to a luxury holiday lodge and all we could think about was if it had wifi and what we would do if it didn’t!
Luckily we used our hotspot on our phones as an interim solution but it really showed me how much we use the internet for. We couldn’t find directions (because who has an A-Z these days?!) We couldn’t plan our routes or trip, we couldn’t research local places to eat and we couldn’t stream music like we usually do! The signal was pretty bad too so we struggled to contact family and basically it was pretty odd. Now we have Baby C, we pop In The Night Garden on occasionally to keep him entertained until his bottle is ready or so I can pop to the loo. If that wasn’t available on demand thanks to broadband, well, we’d need an In The Night Garden boxset In The Night Garden boxset for sure.
Maybe a tech detox is a good idea but right now broadband is a major part of my life both at work and home. If it suddenly decided to not exist, we would be in trouble. REAL trouble! Plus, I have a little online project I’m working on that foley relies on the internet so a good broadband connection is a must! All will be revealed soon.
