Want to add more appeal and a sense of luxury to your home but don’t have the luxury budget to go with it?
You are in luck because with these five simple tips, you can add a sense of decadence and luxury – and on a budget!
#1 Mouldings and Trimmings
Spend an hour or two enjoying the delights of a country pile or spend time browsing the homes of the rich and famous on the web and you will see that there is a commonality between them all. It is not so much the items in the room, but what frames them that turns them for ordinary to extraordinary.
If you are thinking luxury, think small details. Start with the mouldings and trimmings in a room that gives the space not only added appeal but a frame that gives it the ‘finished off’ feel.
- In the living room – add ornate and taller-than-average skirting boards. Consider adding ceiling mouldings where the wall meets the ceiling.
- In the bathroom – make sure that where tiles meet, the border is crisp and clean.
- In the kitchen – as well as making sure the tiling is crisp and clean as in the bathroom, ensure that the kickboards are in place. For added detail, add skirting lights.
#2 Give the Room a Focal Point
Any room that is luxurious in tone and feel has, at its centre, a focal point to which the eye is drawn and on which the eye lingers, admiringly.
This focal point would be anything from quirky wall art to the crisp, clean, white walls along with a contrasting hanging light or, it could be the furniture.
Furniture in a room doesn’t have to be larger than life but it has to look of the highest quality and dressed appropriately with high-quality upholstery and accessories.
Take the conservatory or the orangery, for example. Modern rattan conservatory furniture can be dramatic in colour, with a choice of upholstery and dress cushions.
Chosen well and positioned in the room to give it the exposure it deserves, there is no doubt that high-quality furniture can be the focal point you need.
#3 Use Warm Colours
What does luxury mean to you? Does it mean obvious opulence with glittering jewels or does it mean a classic space, warm, welcoming and elegant?
One of the defining characteristics of a luxurious and appealing room is giving it a warm, inviting feel. The way to achieve this starts and end with colour. Choose a warm colour base and use throughout the entire room, and watch luxury unfold before your very eyes.
The science and psychology behind colours has been a subject of delight for many years and the results are in: for a cosy, yet intimate feel to a room opt for colours such as red, orange and yellow.
For calmness and serenity, choose cool colours such as green or grey, the must-have colour of the moment.
#4 Plump Up the Cushions!
It may sound slightly trivial but what is appealing to the eye is when the seating in a room, such as the living room or even the conservatory furniture is plump and deep.
It gives a sense of awe in so many ways, but a plump sofa invites you into its folds. Rather than pancake flat decorative dress cushions, opt for good quality cushion innards that stay plump looking for longer on your sofa. The cushion material should be stretched taut across it, helping the cushion to remain looking squishy and inviting.
#5 Metallic Accessories
Not all that glitters is gold and so with that warning ringing in our ears, it is time to discuss adding sparkle and reflection with metallic accessories.
But here’s the thing: you need to choose wisely and add metallic items with care as too many can tip a room from luxury to tacky, all in the blink of an eye.
Currently, brass-effect accessories are very much in but rather than filling the room with brass ornaments and sculptures, stick with a chosen few items. The best place to start, we always think at least, is with a well-placed table lamp or two.
Opt for large bulbous or slimline brass bases, complete with a large, but neutral shade. Or for hanging pendant lights, opt for the Moroccan styled brass-effect shades that cast a fantastically warm glow about the room.
And be careful if mixing metals but, done right, the effect is stunning.
Luxury is in the eye of the beholder so take care with the details.
